UK Foreign Secretary to visit India, China for talks on global challenges

Business To Business, London, 31st May, 2026:  Yvette Cooper is set to visit China and India this week on a diplomatic tour focused on strengthening cooperation and addressing major international challenges, according to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
Cooper will travel to China on Monday before heading to India later in the week. The discussions are expected to cover a range of global issues, including:

  • The situation in the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Russian invasion of Ukraine.
  • The Ebola outbreak in parts of Africa.
  • Trade, technology, and broader international cooperation.
In India, Cooper is scheduled to hold bilateral talks on Thursday with S. Jaishankar. She is also expected to meet entrepreneurs, academics, and government partners associated with the UK–India Vision 2035 initiative, which aims to deepen cooperation across areas such as trade, innovation, education, and strategic affairs.
The visit comes at a time when both the UK and India are seeking to expand economic and strategic engagement. The two countries concluded a free trade agreement last year, although some implementation issues have emerged, including concerns related to British steel import restrictions.
Before arriving in India, Cooper will meet Wang Yi and Han Zheng, and will also visit the technology hub of Shenzhen for engagements focused on science and technology cooperation.
The UK government said the engagements with China and India—two of the world's largest economies—are intended to help address significant geopolitical and economic challenges while advancing cooperation with key international partners.
