US slaps 10 per cent tariff on goods imported from India over forced labour concerns

Business To Business, New York, 24th July, 2026:   The United States has imposed a 10 per cent tariff on goods imported from India and 16 other countries as part of its efforts to curb the use of forced labour in the production of imported goods.
The tariff follows a review under Section 301 of the US Trade Act. Last month, India had been proposed for a 12.5 per cent tariff. However, Washington reduced the rate to 10 per cent after taking note of New Delhi's amendment to its foreign trade policy prohibiting the import of goods produced using forced labour.
In a memorandum issued on Thursday, US President Donald Trump said the decision reflected steps taken by the affected economies to strengthen measures against forced labour.
"As a result of these actions, the Trade Representative has advised me that the goods of these economies should be tariffed at the 10 per cent rate to further encourage these economies to effectively enforce such prohibitions," Trump said.
The revised tariff is intended to encourage countries to strengthen the enforcement of laws banning goods produced through forced labour while promoting compliance with international labour standards.
