Veteran British-Nepalese mountaineer Purja, 9 others die in avalanche on Broad Peak in PoK

Business To Business, Kathmandu, 02 August, 2026:   Veteran Nepalese-British mountaineer Nirmal Purja was among 10 climbers who died in an avalanche on Broad Peak in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir's Gilgit-Baltistan region, his expedition company confirmed on Saturday.
According to Elite Exped, the expedition company founded by Purja, the avalanche struck Broad Peak, located in the Karakoram mountain range near K2, at an altitude of around 7,000 metres on Thursday.
The victims included five climbers from Nepal, one Pakistani, one Omani, one American, one Chinese, and Purja himself.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Elite Exped confirmed Purja's death and said no member of the expedition survived the avalanche.
Purja, 43, was internationally renowned for his high-altitude mountaineering achievements and was widely regarded as one of the world's leading climbers. The avalanche marks one of the deadliest mountaineering tragedies in the Karakoram this year.
