Why was the Afghanistan earthquake so deadly? A disaster resilience expert explains

Business To Business, New Delhi, 02 September 2025: The death toll from the recent seismic catastrophe in Afghanistan continues to mount. Taliban-led health authorities now report that at least 800 lives have been lost, with approximately 2,000 individuals wounded.

The quake struck shortly before midnight local time on Sunday in a rugged mountainous region near Jalalabad, along the eastern border with Pakistan. Although it registered a modest magnitude of 6.0, its shallow epicenter—just 8 kilometers beneath the surface—generated intense tremors and a series of aftershocks.

Most casualties occurred as victims were indoors, peacefully asleep when the tremor struck, subsequently succumbing to the collapse of their dwellings. Due to the remote terrain and obstructed roadways caused by landslides triggered by the earthquake, determining the precise death toll may remain a prolonged endeavor.
