Business To Business, Beijing, 14th May 2026: Xi Jinping warned US President Donald Trump on Thursday that mishandling the Taiwan issue could trigger “clashes and even conflicts” between the two countries during wide-ranging talks covering the Iran conflict, energy security and trade relations.
Following the first round of discussions in Beijing, which reportedly lasted around two hours, Trump invited Xi and his wife to the White House on September 24.
The two leaders were also said to be in agreement on the importance of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open to ensure stability in global energy supplies amid ongoing tensions in West Asia.
Speaking after the talks, Xi said China and the United States had agreed on a “new vision” for developing constructive bilateral relations based on strategic stability.
“I have agreed with President Trump on a new vision of building a constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability,” Xi said, signalling an attempt by both sides to manage tensions despite continuing disagreements on sensitive geopolitical issues such as Taiwan.
