Adequate fertiliser stocks available, Govt ready to tackle El Nino impact: Chouhan

Business To Business, Indore, 13th June, 2026:    Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Saturday assured farmers that the country has sufficient stocks of fertilizers and that the government is fully prepared to deal with any adverse effects arising from a possible El Niño event.
The minister said there is no shortage of key fertilizers and that supplies are being closely monitored.
He specifically assured that:

  • Urea will remain available.
  • Di-Ammonium Phosphate (DAP) will continue to be supplied.
  • Farmers will continue to receive these fertilizers at government-subsidized rates.
Chouhan's remarks come amid concerns that geopolitical tensions in West Asia could disrupt global supply chains for fertilizers and fertilizer raw materials.
The minister emphasized that the government has taken necessary steps to ensure uninterrupted availability and that farmers need not worry about shortages or sudden price increases.
The Agriculture Ministry is also monitoring the possibility of El Niño conditions, which can influence India's monsoon rainfall and agricultural output.
According to Chouhan:
  • Contingency plans have been prepared.
  • Crop-management strategies are being reviewed.
  • States are being kept informed and coordinated with.
  • Measures are in place to support farmers if weather conditions become challenging.
A good supply of fertilizers is critical during the kharif sowing season, particularly for crops such as:
  • Rice
  • Maize
  • Pulses
  • Oilseeds
  • Cotton
Ensuring timely availability of urea and DAP helps farmers maintain productivity even when weather conditions are uncertain.
The minister's statement sought to reassure farmers that both fertilizer supplies and agricultural preparedness measures are in place. The government, he said, is keeping a close watch on global developments as well as weather forecasts to safeguard agricultural production and food security.
