After Kolkata warehouse collapse, Suvendu suspends commercial construction projects till July 31
Business To Business, Kolkata, 24th June, 2026: Suvendu Adhikari on Wednesday ordered the suspension of work on all under-construction commercial projects approved during the previous All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) government until July 31, following the warehouse collapse in Kolkata that has claimed five lives.
The announcement came after the Chief Minister visited the accident site in the Taratala area of Kolkata, where rescue and recovery operations have been underway.
Statewide Audit Ordered
Adhikari said he has directed the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) Commissioner and the Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Department to conduct a comprehensive audit of commercial projects approved by the previous government.
The review will cover:
- All under-construction commercial buildings approved under the previous administration.
- Projects where permissions were granted after filling up water bodies.
- Compliance with sanctioned building plans.
- Structural safety and regulatory approvals.
Preliminary Findings
According to the Chief Minister, initial reports submitted to him suggest that the sanctioned building plan of the collapsed warehouse contained flaws.
He stated that the audit would help identify potential safety risks and determine whether any violations occurred during the approval or construction process.
Background
The decision follows the collapse of a three-storey under-construction warehouse in Taratala, which trapped several workers and resulted in multiple casualties. The incident has raised concerns about:
- Building safety standards.
- Approval procedures for commercial projects.
- Compliance with construction regulations.
- Oversight by municipal authorities.
Government's Position
The state government has said the temporary suspension is intended to ensure public safety while authorities examine existing projects and verify whether construction activities comply with approved plans and legal requirements.
The audit's findings could lead to further action against projects found to be violating regulations or posing structural risks. Investigations into the specific causes of the warehouse collapse are also continuing.
