Business To Business, Jammu, 13th June, 2026: The Jammu and Kashmir Police and the National Security Guard (NSG) have successfully completed a week-long joint training exercise named "Shakti Sangam" in Jammu, according to a police spokesperson.
The exercise was organized as security agencies intensify preparations for the annual Amarnath Yatra, which is scheduled to begin on July 3.
Objective of the Exercise
The joint training focused on:
- Counter-terrorism preparedness.
- Crisis response coordination.
- Tactical operations.
- Security management for large gatherings.
- Inter-agency cooperation between local police and specialized forces.
Such exercises are routinely conducted to strengthen readiness for major religious events that attract large numbers of pilgrims.
Importance of the Amarnath Yatra
The Amarnath Yatra is one of India's most significant Hindu pilgrimages, drawing devotees from across the country to the holy cave shrine located at an altitude of approximately
3,880 metres in the Himalayas.
The main base camp for pilgrims in Jammu is:
- Yatri Niwas Bhagwati Nagar
Pilgrims arriving from different parts of India assemble here before proceeding towards Kashmir.
Pilgrimage Routes
The yatra is conducted through two routes:
- Pahalgam Route
- Traditional route.
- Approximately 48 km.
- Longer but comparatively gradual ascent.
- Baltal Route
- Around 14 km.
- Shorter but steeper and more demanding.
Security Arrangements
Given the scale of the pilgrimage and past security concerns in the region, authorities deploy extensive security measures each year involving:
- Jammu and Kashmir Police.
- NSG and other specialized units.
- Central Armed Police Forces.
- Intelligence agencies.
- Disaster response and medical teams.
The first batch of pilgrims is expected to depart from Bhagwati Nagar for Kashmir on
July 2, a day before the official commencement of the yatra.
The completion of Exercise Shakti Sangam is part of broader efforts to ensure a safe and smooth pilgrimage season for the thousands of devotees expected to participate this year.
