Air India pushes new framework for pilots; senior first officers must join AI Express to become commanders

Business To Business Bengaluru, 07 August, 2026:    Air India pilots seeking command positions on narrow-body and wide-body aircraft may have to move to Air India Express under a new framework based on a common seniority pool, according to sources.
The move is part of efforts to streamline pilot career progression between the two Tata Group airlines, including the loss-making Air India Express.
Key features of the proposed framework

• Mandatory shift for eligible pilots: Senior first officers who want to become commanders on aircraft types operated by Air India Express would be required to shift to the airline.
• Common seniority pool: The framework will be based on a shared seniority structure between the two airlines.

• Senior first officers moving to Air India Express to operate narrow-body Boeing 737 aircraft will receive a one-time bonus of Rs 10 lakh.
• Existing Air India Express commanders operating these aircraft will receive Rs 21 lakh over three years.

• Pilots will have to operate from the base assigned by Air India Express for at least two years.
• This period may be extended by up to six months.
• After completing the mandatory period, pilots can choose their preferred operating base based on eligibility.
