All pending CAA applications to be cleared in six months: Bengal CM

Business To Business, New Delhi, 01th August, 2026:   West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday announced that all pending applications for citizenship under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) in the state would be disposed of within the next six months.
Speaking at a CAA citizenship certificate distribution programme in New Town, where around 300 members of the Matua community from North 24 Parganas received citizenship certificates, Adhikari asserted that the legislation was enacted to grant citizenship, not to deprive anyone of it.
"The CAA is meant to grant citizenship, not to take away anyone's citizenship," the chief minister said.
Adhikari also alleged that the previous Trinamool Congress (TMC) government had misled people about the CAA for political gains, while reiterating his administration's commitment to implementing the law.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Act provides a pathway to Indian citizenship for eligible non-Muslim migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who entered India before the prescribed cut-off date, subject to the provisions of the law.
