Business To Business, New Delhi, 08th July, 2026: The Bar Council of India (BCI) on Wednesday welcomed the Supreme Court's recent judgment affirming the independence and self-regulatory character of the legal profession, and announced that it will constitute committees next week to implement the directions issued by the apex court.
The BCI's decision follows the Supreme Court's July 7 ruling by a bench comprising Justices P. S. Narasimha and Alok Aradhe, which held that banks and the Indian Banks' Association (IBA) cannot place lawyers on a "caution list" solely on the basis of allegations of professional negligence.
In a press release, BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra described the ruling as a "historic judgment" that reinforces the autonomy of the legal profession while emphasizing the responsibilities that accompany such independence.
"The historic judgment is not merely a declaration of the rights and independence of the legal profession, but a call to responsibility, renewal and collective action," Mishra said.
He added that the Bar Council would establish dedicated committees to ensure effective implementation of the Supreme Court's directions and to strengthen institutional mechanisms governing the legal profession.
The Supreme Court's verdict is regarded as a significant reaffirmation of the legal profession's self-regulatory framework, clarifying that advocates cannot be subjected to adverse administrative actions by banks or financial institutions without following due legal and disciplinary processes.
The BCI said it remains committed to upholding professional standards, safeguarding the independence of advocates and implementing the court's directions in a manner that strengthens both accountability and the integrity of the legal system.
