Bengal gets Rs 3,000 cr for healthcare revamp, Ayushman Bharat card rollout from July: Suvendu

Business To Business, Kolkata, 23rd May, 2026:  Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday said that West Bengal has received central sanction of around ₹3,000 crore during the current financial year for strengthening the state’s public healthcare infrastructure.
According to Adhikari, nearly ₹500 crore has already been transferred by the Centre for healthcare sector revamp initiatives.
He also announced that beneficiaries in the state are likely to begin receiving cards under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana from July, signalling progress toward implementation of the central health insurance programme in West Bengal.
The development marks a notable contrast with the earlier stance of the previous government led by Mamata Banerjee, which had repeatedly alleged that the BJP-led Union government withheld nearly ₹1 lakh crore in funds meant for the state.
The latest announcement suggests improving Centre-state coordination on:

  • Public healthcare funding
  • Welfare scheme implementation
  • Health insurance coverage
  • Infrastructure modernisation in government healthcare facilities
Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana is one of India’s largest public health insurance schemes, aimed at providing cashless treatment and financial protection to eligible families.
