Bengal's BJP govt trims Eid-Ud-Zoha break, declares May 28 as public holiday

Business To Business, Kolkata, 23rd May, 2026:  The newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party government in West Bengal has revised the public holiday schedule for Eid al-Adha, cancelling the previously announced two-day holidays and declaring May 28 as the sole public holiday.
According to a fresh notification issued by the state Finance Department, the earlier holidays scheduled for May 26 and 27 were withdrawn after authorities received information that the festival would be observed on May 28 this year, in line with the Centre’s holiday calendar.
Eid al-Adha, commonly known as Bakrid, is one of the most significant Islamic festivals and is observed on the 10th day following the sighting of the moon associated with the Islamic lunar calendar.
The decision reflects the state government’s effort to synchronise official holiday schedules with the central government’s observance date.
