Bengal will bring strict anti-conversion law, implement UCC and NRC: CM Suvendu

Business To Business, Kolkata, 26th June, 2026:   West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday said his government would introduce a stringent law against religious conversion and implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state as part of measures aimed at strengthening national security and preserving Bengal's cultural identity.
Addressing a programme at Rabindra Sadan to mark the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, Adhikari alleged that infiltration across West Bengal's international border had contributed to religious conversions, "love jihad" and demographic changes, which he said posed a threat to the state's social fabric and national security.
The chief minister did not provide evidence to substantiate these allegations during his address.
"Give us some time. A strict law against religious conversion, Uniform Civil Code and NRC will be introduced in West Bengal," Adhikari said.
The proposed measures, if pursued, would require legislative and constitutional processes depending on their scope and the division of powers between the Union and the states.
Adhikari's remarks come amid continuing political debate over issues relating to border security, citizenship, religious conversion and the Uniform Civil Code, all of which remain subjects of national discussion and differing political viewpoints.
