BMC to conduct safety audit of manholes, lapses led to Mumbai resident's death: Minister

Business To Business, Mumbai, 02nd July, 2026:   A man died after falling into an open manhole amid heavy rain at an ongoing civic work site in Mumbai on Thursday, with the Maharashtra government attributing the tragedy to significant lapses in safety protocols and announcing action against those found responsible.
Making a statement in the Legislative Assembly, Minister of State for Urban Development Madhuri Misal said strict action has been initiated against those accountable for the incident.
She also said directions have been issued to senior officials of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to inspect every manhole in Mumbai over the next eight days and submit a report certifying that they are properly secured and safe.
Misal informed the House that a committee headed by the Additional Municipal Commissioner (Western Suburbs) has been constituted to investigate the fatal incident in the Chandivali area. The panel has been directed to submit its findings within seven days.
The government said the inquiry will examine the circumstances leading to the accident and identify any negligence in safety measures at the civic work site.
