Body of 11-yr-old girl recovered in Bengal's Baruipur, man lynched over rape-murder charges

Business To Business, Kolkata, 05th July, 2026:    An 11-year-old girl, who had gone missing a day earlier, was found dead in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district on Sunday, sparking widespread protests and leading to the lynching of a man accused by locals of involvement in the alleged rape and murder, police said.
According to police, the girl's body was recovered from the Surjyapur Haat area in Baruipur on Sunday morning. The body was found stuffed inside a sack, prompting outrage among local residents.
Following the discovery, angry protesters blocked the Baruipur–Joynagar Road, set tyres on fire and damaged several police vehicles while demanding the immediate arrest of those responsible for the girl's death, a senior police officer said.
Inspector General of Police, Presidency Range, Kankarprasad Barui, said a man was beaten to death by a mob after locals accused him of being involved in the girl's death. Police intervened to bring the situation under control and launched an investigation into both the alleged crime against the child and the subsequent mob violence.
Authorities have urged people to maintain calm and allow the investigation to proceed, while security has been strengthened in the area to prevent any further deterioration of law and order.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the girl's death, including allegations of rape and murder, and are working to identify all those involved. Separate cases are also expected to be registered in connection with the lynching and the violence during the protests. The exact cause of the girl's death will be established following a post-mortem examination.
