Business To Business, Kolkata, 13th May 2026: Bulldozers rolled into Kolkata’s Tiljala area on Wednesday as the Government of West Bengal launched a demolition drive against illegal structures following the factory fire that killed two persons, signalling the start of a wider crackdown on unauthorised establishments.
The action came hours after Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a “zero-tolerance” policy against illegal factories and directed authorities to disconnect electricity and water supply to units operating without sanctioned building plans.
According to officials, heavy earthmovers accompanied by civic officials and police personnel were deployed in Tiljala to demolish the structure where the illegal leather factory destroyed in Tuesday’s fire had been functioning.
The government’s move is part of an intensified enforcement campaign targeting unauthorised industrial units and unsafe commercial establishments operating in densely populated areas of the city.
