Confident India will win fencing medal at Asian Games: Kiren Rijiju

Business To Business, New Delhi, 24th June, 2026:   Union Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju has expressed confidence that Indian fencers can achieve significant success in the coming years, including winning medals at the upcoming Asian Games and securing qualification for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Asian Fencing Championships on Wednesday, Rijiju highlighted the progress made by the sport in India and called for greater efforts to popularize it among young people.
Optimism for Asian Games
Referring to the upcoming 2026 Asian Games, scheduled to be held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from September 19 to October 4, Rijiju said:
"When I was sports minister, I gave it (fencing) priority and the sport has seen quite a bit of progress. I am hopeful that at the upcoming Asian Games, India will win medals in fencing."

The minister also expressed optimism that Indian fencers would qualify for the 2028 Summer Olympics, marking another milestone in the development of the sport in the country.
Promoting Fencing in India
Rijiju described fencing as a "very interesting" sport and stressed the need to increase its visibility and popularity among Indian youth.
According to him, greater awareness and participation could help:

  • Expand the talent pool
  • Improve international competitiveness
  • Attract more investment and infrastructure support
  • Produce future medal contenders
Growth of the Sport
Fencing has traditionally remained a niche sport in India compared with cricket, badminton, wrestling, or hockey. However, in recent years, Indian fencers have improved their performances at international competitions, aided by better training facilities, international exposure, and institutional support.
Rijiju's remarks reflect growing expectations that India can make a stronger impact in fencing at major international events and broaden its sporting success beyond traditionally dominant disciplines.
