Devotee dies due to suffocation while pulling chariot, Puri Rath Yatra toll mounts to 3

Business To Business, Puri, 25th July, 2026:   A 57-year-old devotee died after allegedly suffering from suffocation while pulling the 'Darpadalan' chariot of Goddess Subhadra during the Bahuda Yatra, the return car festival, in Puri on Friday, police said.
The deceased was identified as Abhiram Das, a resident of Cuttack.
According to police, Das suddenly collapsed while pulling the chariot near Bagala Dharmasala. He was immediately taken to the Puri District Hospital, where he succumbed during treatment.
Police said the devotee is suspected to have died due to suffocation, though the exact cause of death will be confirmed after the necessary medical examination.
The Bahuda Yatra, marking the return journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra from the Gundicha Temple to the Jagannath Temple, draws lakhs of devotees to Puri every year.
