Environment Ministry reconstitutes Nagaland's key regulatory bodies
Business To Business, New Delhi, 4th June, 2026: The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has reconstituted Nagaland's two principal state-level environmental regulatory bodies responsible for evaluating and approving development projects.
Bodies reconstituted
The ministry has reconstituted:
- State Environment Impact Assessment Authority
- State Expert Appraisal Committee
Roles of the two bodies
SEIAA
- Grants Environment Clearances (ECs) for eligible projects at the state level.
- Takes decisions based on environmental assessments and recommendations.
SEAC
- Examines project proposals.
- Assesses potential environmental impacts.
- Provides technical recommendations and advice to the SEIAA before clearances are granted.
Tenure of members
According to the ministry's notification:
"The Chairman and Member of the Authority and the Committee shall hold office for a period of three years from the date of publication of this notification in the Official Gazette."
This means the newly appointed chairpersons and members of both bodies will serve a three-year term.
Why it matters
The SEIAA and SEAC are central to the environmental clearance process for projects such as:
- Infrastructure developments
- Industrial units
- Mining projects
- Construction activities
- Other categories of projects requiring environmental approval under India's environmental regulations
Their assessments help ensure that development projects comply with environmental safeguards and statutory requirements before they proceed.
The reconstitution of these bodies ensures continuity in the environmental appraisal and clearance mechanism in Nagaland and enables the state to continue processing project proposals requiring environmental approvals.
