Gen Subramani takes charge as India's new Chief of Defence Staff
Business To Business, New Delhi, 31st May, 2026: N. S. Raja Subramani on Sunday assumed office as India's new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), succeeding Anil Chauhan, who completed his tenure on Saturday.
Gen Subramani is widely regarded as a military strategist with extensive expertise on issues relating to Pakistan and China. Before taking over as CDS, he served as the Military Adviser at the National Security Council Secretariat (NSCS).
He had earlier retired from active Army service on July 31 last year after serving as the Vice Chief of Army Staff.
Key responsibilities
As the country's senior-most military officer, Gen Subramani is expected to focus on:
- Implementing the military theaterisation plan.
- Enhancing jointness among the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
- Strengthening tri-services operational integration.
- Advancing defence reforms and modernization.
- Improving coordination in strategic planning and procurement.
What is military theaterisation?
Theaterisation refers to the creation of integrated theatre commands that bring together personnel and assets from the three armed services under a unified command structure. The objective is to improve operational efficiency, resource utilization, and preparedness for future conflicts.
The post of CDS was created in 2019 following the recommendations of the Kargil Review Committee and subsequent defence reform initiatives. The CDS serves as the principal military adviser to the government and plays a central role in promoting jointness among the armed forces.
Gen Subramani's appointment comes at a time when India is pursuing major military reforms while addressing evolving security challenges along its borders and in the broader Indo-Pacific region.
