Govt steps up LPG supply, urges calm amid Hormuz concerns

Business To Business, New Delhi, 05 April 2026:  The government has increased sales of 5-kg LPG cylinders (called FTL cylinders).
About 6.6 lakh cylinders have been sold since March 23, with 90,000+ sold on April 4 alone.
FTL (Free Trade LPG) cylinders:

  • Smaller size: 5 kg
  • Sold at market price (no subsidy)
  • Available over-the-counter at LPG distributors
Key Differences vs Regular Cylinders
Feature 5-kg FTL Cylinder 14.2-kg Domestic Cylinder
Subsidy ❌ No ✅ Yes (for eligible users)
Documents Only valid ID needed Requires address + connection
Availability Easy, instant purchase Linked to registered connection
Use Case Short-term / emergency Regular household use
Easier access (no address proof needed)
Quick solution during:
  • Supply shortages
  • Travel or temporary stays
  • Emergency needs
Government is ramping up supply to meet demand
If you're trying to save money or stay flexible:
Good option if you don’t have a connection
✅ Useful for short-term or shared living setups
❌ But cost per kg is higher than subsidized cylinders
So:
Use 5-kg cylinders for convenience/emergencies
Stick to 14.2-kg subsidized LPG for long-term savings
The surge in 5-kg LPG sales shows a shift toward convenience and accessibility, even at higher prices—especially useful for people without formal LPG connections.
