India may see 90 per cent of long-period average rainfall this monsoon: IMD

Business To Business, New Delhi, 29th May, 2026:    The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday said that the southwest monsoon rainfall over India during the June–September season is expected to be below normal this year.
In its second forecast for the 2026 monsoon season, the IMD projected rainfall at 90% of the long-period average (LPA), with a model error margin of ±4%.
The department said the LPA of seasonal rainfall across the country, calculated using data from 1971 to 2020, stands at 87 cm.
A below-normal monsoon could have implications for agriculture, water reservoirs, rural demand, and inflation, especially as the Kharif sowing season begins with the arrival of the southwest monsoon.
