Indo-US trade deal almost done, just 1 pc sticking points under discussion: Ambassador Gor
Business To Business, Mumbai, 3rd June, 2026: The proposed India–United States trade agreement is reportedly close to completion, with the US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor stating that the deal is about 99% finalised, and only minor issues remain unresolved.
Speaking at Citi’s 2026 India Conference in Mumbai, Gor said both sides are working to resolve the remaining “1%” of sticking points and expressed confidence that the long-awaited agreement could be signed within the next few weeks.
Key points highlighted by the US envoy
- The trade deal between India and the United States is nearly complete.
- Remaining differences are being actively negotiated by both sides.
- The US maintains relatively lower tariff levels for India compared to neighbouring countries.
- Washington continues to place strong strategic importance on its relationship with New Delhi.
Gor also underscored the continuity in India–US relations, noting that even during periods when Donald Trump was out of office between 2021 and 2025, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi maintained communication with him, reflecting what he described as a strong personal rapport between the two leaders.
Broader significance
If finalised, the agreement could mark a major milestone in bilateral economic relations, potentially expanding trade cooperation, reducing barriers in key sectors, and strengthening strategic economic ties between the two countries.
Negotiations are expected to continue in the coming weeks as both sides attempt to resolve the final outstanding issues before formal signing.
