Lakhs appear for NEET re-test amid tight security after paper leak row

Business To Business, New Delhi, 21st June, 2026:  Lakhs of medical aspirants across India appeared for a fresh edition of the NEET (UG) examination on Sunday after the original test scheduled for May 3 was cancelled due to allegations of paper leaks.
The controversy had sparked widespread criticism, political debate, and protests, putting significant pressure on the authorities responsible for conducting the country's premier undergraduate medical entrance examination.
According to officials, the re-examination was conducted at 5,440 centres across 551 cities in India and 14 centres overseas.
To ensure the integrity of the examination process, authorities implemented extensive security measures, including:

  • More than 1.38 lakh CCTV cameras for surveillance
  • Monitoring of approximately 95,000 examination rooms
  • Deployment of 51,311 electronic jammers to prevent the use of unauthorized communication devices and curb electronic malpractice
The enhanced security arrangements were aimed at restoring confidence among candidates and parents following the cancellation of the earlier examination.
NEET-UG is the gateway for admission to undergraduate medical courses, including MBBS and BDS programmes, across India. Given the large number of candidates and the high stakes involved, the examination is one of the country's most closely watched entrance tests.
Officials said the re-test was conducted smoothly under strict monitoring, with special emphasis on preventing any recurrence of the irregularities that led to the cancellation of the original examination.
