Manipal Hospital EM Bypass Achieves a Significant Milestone in India's Maternal Cardiac Care with Rare Twin Pregnancy Heart Procedure

Business To Business, Kolkata, 26th May, 2026:    Manipal Hospitals EM Bypass has successfully carried out a rare and high-risk cardiac intervention that saved the life of a 26-year-old pregnant woman carrying twins and suffering from severe heart failure.
The patient, from Bhagalpur, was reportedly in critical condition during the 24th week of pregnancy when she was treated by a multidisciplinary medical team led by Dr. Dilip Kumar.
Doctors performed a complex Balloon Mitral Valvotomy (BMV), a specialised heart procedure used to treat severe narrowing of the mitral valve, which can critically impair blood flow and place extreme strain on the heart.
According to the hospital, the intervention:

  • Stabilised the mother’s deteriorating condition
  • Helped manage severe heart failure during pregnancy
  • Protected the lives of both unborn babies
  • Represented a major achievement in maternal-fetal cardiac care
The case is considered medically significant because:
  • Pregnancy substantially increases cardiovascular stress
  • Twin pregnancies carry additional risk
  • Cardiac interventions during pregnancy require careful balancing of maternal and fetal safety
  • Such procedures demand close coordination between cardiologists, obstetricians, anaesthetists, and critical care specialists
The successful outcome highlights advances in high-risk cardiac and maternal healthcare in India.
