Ministry takes first step towards JLN''s transformation into Sports City

Business To Business, New Delhi, 4th June, 2026:   The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has initiated the redevelopment process for the iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium by inviting bids for the appointment of a Transaction Advisor, marking the first formal step toward transforming the venue into a world-class Sports City.
Redevelopment plan
The ministry intends to:

  • Dismantle and rebuild the existing stadium complex.
  • Develop a Sports City spread across approximately 102 acres.
  • Create facilities catering to multiple major sporting disciplines.
  • Include athlete accommodation and support infrastructure.
  • Upgrade the venue to international standards.
Role of the Transaction Advisor
According to officials, the selected advisor will:
  • Guide the overall redevelopment process.
  • Provide consultancy services on project structuring.
  • Conduct risk assessment and mitigation planning.
  • Undertake financial due diligence.
  • Assist in evaluating execution and investment models.
The bids for appointing the advisor are expected to be opened in the coming weeks.
Significance of the project
The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is one of India's most prominent sporting venues and has hosted numerous major events, including the 2010 Commonwealth Games.
The proposed Sports City is expected to:
  • Modernize India's sports infrastructure.
  • Provide integrated training and competition facilities.
  • Support athlete development across disciplines.
  • Enhance New Delhi's capacity to host international sporting events.
What comes next?
Once the Transaction Advisor is appointed, the next stages are likely to include:
  • Detailed feasibility studies.
  • Financial and operational planning.
  • Preparation of redevelopment models.
  • Selection of implementation partners.
  • Phased redevelopment and construction.
If completed as envisioned, the project could become one of the largest sports infrastructure redevelopment initiatives undertaken in India, creating a comprehensive sporting hub rather than a standalone stadium complex.
