Business To Business, New Delhi, 12th June, 2026:    As Narendra Modi begins his visit to France on Saturday, defence cooperation is expected to be a major focus of discussions, with both countries looking to strengthen their long-standing strategic partnership.
The talks come at a time when India is seeking to enhance its military capabilities, particularly in the maritime domain and underwater warfare, amid growing strategic competition in key sea lanes and maritime regions.

According to reports, India and France are likely to accelerate negotiations for the procurement of three additional Scorpene-class submarines.
The submarines are expected to be built jointly by:

The project would build on the existing Scorpene submarine programme under which six submarines were constructed in India.
France has become one of India's most important defence partners in recent years, supplying several major military platforms, including:
  • Dassault Rafale fighter jets.
  • Scorpene-class submarines.
  • Advanced naval and aerospace technologies.
The partnership is increasingly characterized by technology transfer, local manufacturing, and joint development initiatives.
The expected defence discussions reflect India's growing emphasis on:
  • Strengthening naval deterrence.
  • Enhancing underwater combat capability.
  • Securing maritime trade routes.
  • Expanding indigenous defence manufacturing.
Both India and France also share interests in maintaining stability and freedom of navigation across the Indian Ocean Region and the wider Indo-Pacific.
Beyond defence procurement, the Modi visit is expected to cover:
  • Strategic and security cooperation.
  • Space collaboration.
  • Technology partnerships.
  • Trade and investment.
  • Climate and energy initiatives.
The planned push on submarine and fighter aircraft programmes underscores the growing depth of the India–France strategic relationship, which has become one of New Delhi's most significant defence partnerships in recent years.
