Modi transformed NE from 'no-hope' zone to attractive destination: Sonowal

Business To Business, Agartala, 14th June, 2026:    Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday said that the Northeast region has undergone a significant transformation during the 12 years of Narendra Modi's tenure, evolving from what he described as a "no-hope" zone into an attractive destination for development and investment.
Speaking at a Jan Kalyan Shivir held at Rabindra Bhavan to mark 12 years of the Modi government, Sonowal said that before 2014 the Northeast was often associated with violence, kidnappings, blockades, and insurgency-related incidents.
According to the minister, the region lacked a sense of security and was widely viewed as a disturbed area. He argued that the situation has changed substantially over the past decade, with improvements in peace, infrastructure, connectivity, and economic opportunities.
Sonowal stated that around 10,000 armed insurgents have laid down their weapons and joined the mainstream, contributing to a more peaceful environment across the region. He credited the Modi government's policies and sustained engagement with northeastern states for helping bring stability and development.
The minister also highlighted what he described as all-round growth in the Northeast, pointing to enhanced connectivity projects, infrastructure expansion, and increased national attention to the region's development needs.
The Northeast comprises eight states—Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim—and has been a key focus area of the central government's connectivity and development initiatives in recent years.
