Modi, Trump to meet on June 17 on sidelines of G-7 in France

Business To Business, New Delhi, 13th June, 2026:  US President Donald Trump is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the G7 Summit 2026 in Évian, France, next week. Senior US administration officials have confirmed that Trump plans to meet India's leader during the summit.
The meeting will be the first in-person interaction between the two leaders since Modi's visit to Washington in February 2025, shortly after Trump's return to the White House.
The talks are expected to take place against the backdrop of several sensitive issues:

  • The deaths of three Indian mariners in recent US military action against commercial vessels near the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Trade tensions and tariffs imposed by Washington on Indian goods.
  • Regional security developments following Operation Sindoor.
  • Maritime security and freedom of navigation in the Gulf region.
  • Ongoing negotiations over a broader India-US trade arrangement.
The meeting is being closely watched because it comes at a time when India-US relations are navigating a difficult phase. Recent disagreements over trade, US policy toward Pakistan, and maritime incidents involving Indian crew members have generated friction between the two countries. At the same time, both sides continue to view each other as important strategic partners in areas such as defense, technology, critical minerals, and Indo-Pacific security.
While media reports had earlier described the meeting as "likely" or under discussion, senior US officials and the White House have now indicated that Trump will meet Modi during the summit, making it one of the most significant bilateral engagements on the sidelines of the G7 gathering.
The outcome of the discussions could shape the trajectory of India-US relations on trade, security, and regional diplomacy in the coming months.
