Monsoon arrives in Mumbai, 13 days late

Business To Business, Mumbai, 23rd June, 2026:   The southwest monsoon finally arrived in Mumbai on Tuesday, ending a prolonged wait and bringing relief from hot and humid conditions across the city.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monsoon's advance has now covered additional parts of western, central, and eastern India.
The IMD said:
"The southwest monsoon has further advanced into remaining parts of central Arabian Sea, some more parts of Maharashtra including Mumbai, remaining parts of Telangana and Odisha, some more parts of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar."
Delayed Arrival
The monsoon reached Mumbai 13 days after its normal onset date, making it a notably delayed arrival for the country's financial capital.
The onset is particularly important because Mumbai's water supply, agriculture in surrounding regions, and overall weather conditions are closely tied to monsoon rainfall.
Areas Covered in Latest Advance
The monsoon has now progressed into:

  • Additional parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai
  • Remaining parts of Telangana
  • Remaining parts of Odisha
  • More areas of Chhattisgarh
  • More areas of Jharkhand
  • More areas of Bihar
Significance
The arrival of the monsoon is expected to:
  • Provide relief from high temperatures and humidity
  • Improve water availability
  • Support agricultural activities in many regions
  • Boost reservoir levels ahead of the peak rainy season
Meteorologists will continue to monitor the pace and distribution of rainfall, as the performance of the monsoon plays a crucial role in agriculture, food prices, water resources, and overall economic activity in India.
