Mumbai mayor hosts flower Holi event, calls for eco-friendly festivities

Business To Business, Mumbai, 03 March 2026: In a push for sustainable festivities, Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde on Tuesday hosted a ‘Phulanchi Holi’ (Holi of flowers) event, encouraging citizens to avoid chemical colours and reduce water wastage.
The initiative was organised by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) at Rajawadi Garden, in the presence of MLA Parag Shah.
Focus on Green Celebrations
The event aimed to:

  • Promote the use of flower petals instead of chemical colours.
  • Discourage water wastage during Holi celebrations.
  • Prevent the burning of hazardous materials during Holika Dahan.
  • Raise awareness about environmentally responsible festive practices.
Speaking at the event, Tawde emphasised that festivals such as Holika Dahan and Rangpanchami should be observed with social responsibility and environmental consciousness.
Why It Matters
Traditional Holi celebrations often involve synthetic colours and excessive water use, which can:
  • Harm skin and the environment.
  • Pollute water bodies.
  • Increase waste and air pollution during bonfires.
The BMC’s ‘Phulanchi Holi’ initiative highlights a growing shift toward eco-conscious celebrations in urban India.
