New CM Suvendu for observing 'West Bengal Day' on June 20, not Poila Baisakh chosen by Mamata

Business To Business, Kolkata, 10th May, 2026: Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday said his government would propose observing “West Bengal Day” on June 20 instead of Poila Boishakh, which had been designated by former chief minister Mamata Banerjee.
Addressing reporters, Adhikari said the date commemorates the historic decision in 1947 that led to West Bengal remaining part of India during Partition.
“I will definitely place this proposal before the cabinet and the Assembly,” he said.
On June 20, 1947, legislators from West Bengal voted in favour of Partition, while a joint meeting involving MLAs from East Bengal — which later became Pakistan’s East Pakistan and subsequently Bangladesh — voted against partition of the undivided province.
