Northern states record below-normal temperatures as rain, thunderstorms lash several places
Business To Business, New Delhi, 1st June, 2026: Large parts of northern India experienced relatively mild weather on June 1, with temperatures remaining below normal in many states and rain-related activity providing additional relief from early-summer heat.
Weather across North India
Rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds were reported in parts of:
- Uttar Pradesh
- Rajasthan
- Himachal Pradesh
These weather systems helped keep daytime temperatures lower than seasonal averages across several north Indian regions.
Monsoon update
According to the India Meteorological Department, the southwest monsoon is expected to reach Kerala within the next two to three days. The monsoon normally arrives around June 1, making this year's onset close to its climatological schedule.
The IMD said conditions are favorable for the monsoon to advance further into:
- Parts of the southwest Arabian Sea
- Parts of the southeast Arabian Sea
- Lakshadweep Islands
- Kerala
- Parts of Tamil Nadu
Why the monsoon matters
The southwest monsoon accounts for roughly 70–75% of India's annual rainfall and is crucial for:
- Agriculture and kharif crop sowing
- Reservoir and groundwater replenishment
- Hydropower generation
- Rural incomes and consumption
What to expect next
As the monsoon progresses northward over the coming weeks, rainfall is expected to gradually spread across southern, eastern, and central parts of the country before reaching northern India later in the season. In the meantime, intermittent thunderstorms and pre-monsoon showers may continue to influence weather conditions across parts of north and northwest India, helping keep temperatures below normal in several areas.
For farmers, water managers, and businesses dependent on weather conditions, the pace and distribution of monsoon rainfall during June will be closely watched, as it often sets the tone for the rest of the rainy season.
