Odisha CM sets up inquiry panel as errors in school textbooks cause uproar

Business To Business, Bhubaneshwar, 17th June, 2026:  Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday ordered the formation of a three-member committee to investigate and identify those responsible for approximately 1,600 errors found in newly published textbooks for Classes 1 to 8 in Odisha.
The controversy emerged after a section of teachers in government-run schools flagged numerous mistakes in the textbooks, including:

  • Spelling errors.
  • Incorrect names of eminent personalities.
  • Factual and editorial inaccuracies.
The errors were reportedly found in textbooks meant for primary and upper-primary students.
In response to the complaints, the Chief Minister directed the constitution of a three-member panel to:
  • Examine the nature and extent of the errors.
  • Determine how the mistakes occurred.
  • Fix accountability for lapses in the preparation, editing, and publication process.
  • Recommend corrective measures.
The move comes amid growing criticism over the quality-control mechanisms used in textbook production.
The issue triggered a sharp political response, with opposition parties accusing the BJP government of negligence.
Opposition leaders argued that:
  • The large number of mistakes reflected serious shortcomings in oversight.
  • Errors in school textbooks could adversely affect students' learning.
  • The incident had hurt Odia linguistic and cultural pride.
Textbooks serve as the primary learning material for millions of students, making accuracy especially important. Errors involving language, historical figures, and factual content can create confusion among students and teachers alike.
The committee's findings are expected to determine responsibility and guide revisions to ensure that corrected versions of the textbooks are made available to schools. The incident has also renewed calls for stronger editorial review and quality-control processes in educational publishing.
