Odisha prepared to tackle any El Nino impact, people need not panic: Minister
Business To Business, Bhubaneshwar, 13th June, 2026: The Odisha government on Saturday appealed to residents not to panic over the possibility of El Niño conditions influencing this year's monsoon, stating that it has comprehensive contingency plans in place to handle any adverse developments.
The assurance comes after Mohan Charan Majhi identified a possible El Niño event as one of the major challenges facing the state during a review meeting on Friday.
Officials emphasized that while the state is closely monitoring weather developments, there is no reason for alarm at present.
The government said it has:
- Prepared contingency plans for agriculture.
- Strengthened disaster management mechanisms.
- Reviewed water resource management strategies.
- Coordinated with relevant departments to respond quickly if rainfall patterns are affected.
El Niño is a periodic warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean that can influence weather patterns around the world.
Its effects on India can include:
- Below-normal monsoon rainfall in some regions.
- Delayed onset or uneven distribution of rains.
- Higher temperatures and drought-like conditions in certain areas.
- Stress on agriculture and water resources.
However, the actual impact varies from year to year and depends on several atmospheric and oceanic factors.
As an agriculture-dependent state, Odisha closely tracks monsoon forecasts because rainfall plays a crucial role in:
- Paddy cultivation.
- Irrigation availability.
- Reservoir levels.
- Rural livelihoods.
Any significant deviation in monsoon performance can affect crop production and water availability.
The state government indicated that departments concerned with agriculture, water resources, disaster management, and rural development have been instructed to remain prepared for different scenarios.
While acknowledging that a possible El Niño remains a challenge, the government stressed that advance planning and preparedness would help minimize any adverse impact on farmers and the broader economy.
Officials also urged citizens to rely on information from authorized government and meteorological agencies rather than speculation regarding monsoon conditions.
