One fisherman rescued, six still missing after boat capsizes off Visakhapatnam coast

Business To Business, Visakhapatnam, 07th July, 2026:    A fisherman who survived the capsizing of a fishing boat off the Visakhapatnam coast has recounted his harrowing ordeal at sea, where he was eventually rescued by the crew of a passing ship after drifting in the water for hours.
Kari Chinna, who returned safely to shore on Monday, said the ship's crew spotted him floating in the sea, threw him a life jacket and pulled him aboard, saving him from certain death before bringing him safely back to land.
The fishing boat, carrying seven fishermen, capsized off the Visakhapatnam coast on Saturday.
"There were seven people in total. The boat capsized on Saturday and one person, my elder brother's son, immediately went missing. We were all holding on to the boat. By around 9 pm, the boat started sinking, and by around midnight another person went missing. The remaining five of us decided to stay together because we believed that if we got separated, one of us would die somewhere," Chinna told reporters on Tuesday.
He said the group initially clung to the overturned boat in the hope of being rescued. However, as the vessel gradually submerged, the fishermen were forced to rely on floating debris and their determination to survive.
According to Chinna, the passing ship's crew noticed him drifting in the sea, promptly launched a rescue effort and brought him safely on board.
Search and rescue operations are continuing to trace the remaining missing fishermen. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident and have appealed to coastal communities for any information that may assist in locating the missing crew members.
