Onion farmers, MVA leaders stage protest against procurement prices in Nashik, block highway
Business To Business, Nashik, 26th May, 2026: Onion farmers in Nashik district staged a large protest on Tuesday against government procurement prices, blocking the busy Mumbai–Agra National Highway near Chandwad town.
The agitation, organised under the banner of the “Kanda Utpadak Shetkari Kranti Mahamorcha,” saw farmers and opposition leaders joining forces to demand higher and more stable prices for onions.
Key political leaders involved in the protest included:
- Rohit Pawar
- Ambadas Danve
- Harshwardhan Sapkal
According to officials, protesters:
- Blocked traffic on the national highway
- Travelled in a symbolic bullock cart procession
- Attempted to deflate tyres of stranded vehicles in some instances
Police intervened to restore order and detained several participants after the protest disrupted movement along the highway.
The agitation highlights continuing tensions in Maharashtra over agricultural pricing, particularly for onions, which are a key cash crop and politically sensitive commodity in the state.
