Plant native fruit-bearing trees under 'Green Goa' drive: GCCI to govt

Business To Business, Panaji, 7th June, 2026:   The Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) has urged the Goa government to prioritize native fruit-bearing trees in its large-scale plantation campaign.
The appeal comes after Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced a 90-day drive to plant 10 lakh trees under the "Green Goa, Clean Goa" campaign.
The initiative is linked to Narendra Modi's Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam programme.
GCCI's Recommendations
In its letter to the Chief Minister, the GCCI:

  • Welcomed the goal of planting 10 lakh trees across Goa.
  • Argued that the focus should be on creating a sustainable and productive green cover, not merely meeting plantation targets.
  • Recommended prioritizing traditional native fruit-bearing species such as:
    • Mango
    • Jackfruit
    • Kokum
    • Jamun
    • Tamarind
  • Suggested avoiding ornamental or invasive species wherever practical.
Why It Matters
The GCCI's proposal reflects a broader environmental approach that emphasizes:
  • Better survival rates of native species.
  • Support for local biodiversity and wildlife.
  • Additional economic and nutritional benefits through fruit production.
  • Long-term ecological sustainability rather than short-term plantation numbers.
Key takeaway: While supporting Goa's ambitious tree-planting drive, the GCCI wants the government to prioritize indigenous fruit-bearing trees so that the campaign delivers lasting environmental, ecological, and community benefits alongside increased green cover.
