Business To Business, New Delhi, 13th May 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged his cabinet colleagues to reduce unnecessary expenditure, including fuel consumption, as part of broader efforts to contain the country’s import bill amid the ongoing West Asia crisis, sources said.
During a meeting of the Union Cabinet of India chaired by the prime minister, Modi is learnt to have asked ministers to focus on cost-cutting and consciously reduce the use of resources in view of global economic uncertainties and rising energy concerns.
According to sources, the prime minister also advised ministers to reduce the size of their official convoys and limit foreign visits wherever possible.
The appeal follows Modi’s recent public call urging citizens to conserve fuel, avoid unnecessary gold purchases and adopt measures that could help reduce pressure on India’s import expenditure during heightened geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
