Project to increase capacity of Wazirabad WTP pending as capital braces for water shortage

Business To Business, New Delhi, 26th May, 2026:    The desilting project at the Wazirabad Barrage remains stalled more than a year after it was announced, even as New Delhi faces the possibility of acute water shortages during peak summer.
According to a senior official of the Delhi Jal Board (DJB), the city’s water supply has come under pressure due to critically low raw water levels, with the situation expected to persist for at least the next few days.
The official said that:

  • A tender for pondage area works was floated last year
  • The tender process later encountered issues
  • The tender was eventually cancelled
The desilting project is considered important because accumulated silt at the barrage affects:
  • Water storage capacity
  • Raw water availability
  • Efficient water supply operations
The ongoing heatwave conditions and rising demand for water have further intensified concerns over supply management in the capital.
Delhi Jal Board oversees water distribution in Delhi, where summer months frequently lead to increased stress on water infrastructure and supply systems.
