RG Kar rape-murder: Ex-Kolkata CP among 3 IPS officers suspended over 'lapses' in initial probe

Business To Business, Kolkata, 15th May 2026: Suvendu Adhikari on Friday announced the suspension of three senior IPS officers over alleged mishandling and dereliction of duty during the initial investigation into the RG Kar hospital rape-murder case.
Addressing reporters at the state secretariat in Kolkata, Adhikari said disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against former Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal and former deputy commissioners Indira Mukherjee and Abhishek Gupta following a departmental inquiry.
According to the chief minister, the officers were allegedly involved in “mishandling” the investigation, “offering money to the victim’s parents as a bribe”, and conducting an “unauthorised press conference” related to the case.
The crime occurred on August 9, 2024, at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, where a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor was found raped and murdered.
The move follows the Bharatiya Janata Party’s pre-election promise to reopen files related to the case and review the handling of the investigation.
