Saket building collapse: Delhi CM orders inquiry, intensifies illegal construction crackdown
Business To Business, New Delhi, 31st May, 2026: Rekha Gupta on Sunday visited the site of the building collapse in the Saket area that claimed six lives and assured strict action against unauthorised construction as well as officials found responsible.
The collapse occurred on Saturday evening on Western Marg in the Saidulajab locality when a multi-storey building suddenly gave way.
Details of the incident
According to reports:
- The building housed a coaching institute, cafés, and office spaces.
- Construction work was allegedly being carried out on the upper floor when the structure collapsed.
- Six people lost their lives in the incident.
- Rescue and relief operations were launched immediately after the collapse.
Chief Minister's response
After inspecting the site, Gupta said that:
- Action would be taken against those responsible for unauthorised construction activities.
- Officials found negligent in enforcing building regulations would also face consequences.
- The government would examine the circumstances that led to the tragedy to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Police action
A criminal case has been registered at Mehrauli Police Station in connection with the collapse.
Authorities are investigating:
- Whether the building complied with approved construction plans.
- The legality of the ongoing construction work.
- Possible violations of safety and municipal regulations.
- The role of builders, owners, contractors, and concerned officials.
The incident has renewed concerns about illegal construction and structural safety in densely populated urban areas of Delhi, where unauthorised modifications and additions to buildings have often been cited as factors in similar accidents.
