Sourav Ganguly makes police complaint over defamatory posts on social media

Business To Business, Kolkata, 15th June, 2026:   Former India captain and former Board of Control for Cricket in India president Sourav Ganguly has lodged a complaint with police alleging that a Facebook page was circulating defamatory and misleading content in his name.
According to the complaint, Ganguly alleged that a page titled "Sourav Ganguly Fans", which identifies itself as an unofficial fan page, has been repeatedly sharing posts that he says are harming his reputation.
In his complaint to Thakurpukur Police Station, Ganguly stated that the page was publishing content:
"that are intended to malign my reputation and create a negative impression among the public."
He sought action against the individuals operating the page and requested that the authorities investigate the matter.
The complaint centers on allegations that:

  • Misleading content is being shared using Ganguly's name.
  • The posts create a false impression among the public.
  • The content is damaging to his personal reputation.
  • The page has a large follower base, potentially amplifying its reach.
Under Indian law, complaints involving alleged defamation, impersonation, misinformation, or unauthorized use of a person's identity on social media may be examined by police and cybercrime authorities. Investigators can seek details about page administrators and assess whether any laws have been violated.
Sourav Ganguly is one of India's most prominent cricket figures, having captained the national team and later served as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Because of his public profile, any content circulated in his name or about him on social media can attract significant public attention.
