Business To Business, Mumbai, 29th July, 2026: Police have arrested a 26-year-old student for allegedly developing malicious APK files used by an inter-state cybercrime syndicate that is accused of duping thousands of people across the country of more than Rs 60 crore, an official said on Wednesday.
The investigation began after the Dr D B Marg Police received a complaint that an unidentified individual was sending fraudulent messages in the name of Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), urging recipients to install a malicious APK file.
According to police, the fake application enabled the cybercriminals to execute their fraud by compromising victims' devices and facilitating unauthorised financial transactions.
The arrested student is alleged to have developed the APK files used in the operation. Police are investigating the wider inter-state network and attempting to identify other members involved in the cyber fraud.
The probe is continuing to trace the full extent of the racket, which allegedly targeted thousands of victims across India through deceptive messages masquerading as official communications from Mahanagar Gas Limited.
