Suvendu govt ends religion-based aid, sets up panels to probe corruption, crimes against women during TMC rule

Business To Business, Kolkata, 18th May, 2026:    The Government of West Bengal on Monday announced a series of major policy decisions signalling a sharp shift in governance priorities under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
At a cabinet meeting chaired by Adhikari, the government decided to discontinue religion-based financial assistance provided to imams and others, introduce the Annapurna Scheme for women, and constitute two committees to examine allegations of corruption and crimes against women during the tenure of the All India Trinamool Congress government.
The cabinet also approved:

  • Free travel for women on government-run buses,
  • Scrapping of the existing state OBC list,
  • Constitution of the Seventh State Pay Commission to recommend salary revisions for state government employees.
Agnimitra Paul, the Women, Child and Social Welfare Minister, said all the decisions would come into effect from June 1.
