Suvendu lauds Syama Prasad Mookerjee's role in Bengal's history

Business To Business, Kolkata, 4th June, 2026:   Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday credited Syama Prasad Mookerjee with playing a crucial role in ensuring that West Bengal remained part of India during the partition era.
Speaking at a programme related to the implementation of the National e-Vidhan Application in the West Bengal Assembly, Adhikari referred to the political developments surrounding the partition of British India in 1947.
Adhikari's remarks
The Chief Minister said:
"If Syama Prasad Mookerjee had not been there, we would have become part of an Islamic country like Bangladesh."
He argued that Mookerjee's political intervention and advocacy were instrumental in securing the inclusion of large parts of Bengal within India when the province was partitioned.
Historical context
During the run-up to partition in 1947, Bengal was one of the provinces whose future became the subject of intense political debate. Different proposals were discussed, including:

  • A united independent Bengal.
  • Partition of Bengal between India and Pakistan.
  • Inclusion of the entire province in Pakistan.
Mookerjee, then a prominent political leader, strongly supported the partition of Bengal so that Hindu-majority western districts would remain within India. The eventual partition created the Indian state of West Bengal and what became East Pakistan, later the independent nation of Bangladesh in 1971.
Political significance
Adhikari's comments come amid the BJP-led government's decision to officially observe June 20 as West Bengal Day, linking the date to the 1947 Bengal Assembly vote that supported the partition of Bengal and the creation of West Bengal within India.
His remarks reflect a long-standing position within the Bharatiya Janata Party and its ideological predecessors that Mookerjee played a decisive role in shaping the state's present-day boundaries and political identity.
