Syama Prasad Mookerjee's life and work to be part of school syllabus in Bengal: Suvendu

Business To Business, Kolkata, 07th July, 2026:    West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday said the life and contributions of Bharatiya Jana Sangh (BJS) founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee will be included in the state's school textbooks, while asserting that the episode relating to the exit of the Tata Motors Nano project from Singur should no longer form part of the curriculum.
Speaking on the sidelines of a programme marking the 125th birth anniversary of Syama Prasad Mookerjee at his alma mater, Mitra Institution in Kolkata's Bhabanipur, the Chief Minister said he would convey his "appeal and wish" to the state's School Education Minister regarding the proposed curriculum changes.
Adhikari said Mookerjee's life and work deserved to be taught to students, describing him as an important national figure whose contributions should be reflected in school education.
At the same time, he criticised the events surrounding the Tata Motors Nano project at Singur, stating that "those who drove out the Tata Motors Nano factory from Singur should not be in the syllabus."
"The story of driving out the Tatas from Singur should be excluded from the syllabus," he said.
The Chief Minister's remarks come amid continuing political debate over the Singur land acquisition controversy, which led to Tata Motors relocating its Nano manufacturing project from West Bengal. Any changes to school textbooks would be subject to the state's curriculum review and approval process by the relevant education authorities.
