Wangchuk rejects 'deal' with Centre charge, says ended fast fearing crackdown like Ladakh

Business To Business, New Delhi, 25th July, 2026:   Activist Sonam Wangchuk has rejected allegations that he struck a "deal" with the Centre, saying he ended his 26-day indefinite hunger strike only after receiving a written assurance that no legal action would be taken against peaceful protesters.
In a YouTube video posted late Friday night, Wangchuk said he feared an imminent crackdown on demonstrators in Delhi and wanted to prevent any violence against students, recalling the 2025 firing on youths in Ladakh.
He said the written assurance from the Centre was the key condition for ending his fast, as his foremost priority was to ensure the safety of protesters.
Wangchuk also clarified that he did not raise the demand for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan during negotiations because his immediate focus was on preventing legal action against those participating in peaceful protests.
The activist said his decision was guided by the need to avoid further confrontation and safeguard the rights of protesters while ensuring that demonstrations remained peaceful.
