Waters receding but flood-hit people unable to return as houses damaged, filled with mud: Himanta

Business To Business, Guwahati, 29th July, 2026:   Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said that although floodwaters have receded from most of the affected areas, many displaced residents are still unable to return home as their houses have either been damaged or filled with mud and silt.
Addressing reporters after flagging off relief materials collected by state BJP workers, Sarma said the flood situation has improved since there has been no heavy rainfall after July 21. However, he noted that the extent of the damage remains a major challenge.
"The flood situation has improved as there has been no heavy rainfall after July 21. But the problem is that the damage has been so huge," the chief minister said.
Sarma added that access to some of the worst-affected areas continues to be difficult, as roads have been blocked by mud and debris brought down by floodwaters flowing from the adjoining hills of Nagaland.
The state government is continuing relief and rehabilitation efforts as authorities work to restore connectivity and assist affected families in returning to their homes.
